CARB Clean Truck Check is the California emissions inspection for diesel vehicles with a GVWR of 14,001 lbs or more. A truck registered in California is in the program. An out-of-state truck is in the program when it operates in California.
The diesel vehicles in that group include:
- Semis
- Box trucks
- Dump trucks
- Concrete mixers
- Buses
- Diesel motorhomes
- Agricultural trucks on public roads
- Utility trucks and bucket trucks
- Refuse trucks
The engine year decides the test. A 2013 or newer engine takes HD-OBD, a scan of the emissions monitors. A pre-2013 engine takes a smoke opacity test (snap acceleration).
Clean Truck Check is the current test. CARB's Clean Truck Check FAQ says the older Periodic Smoke Inspection Program sunset when Clean Truck Check testing took effect. Most heavy-duty vehicles are tested twice a year. On-road agricultural vehicles, and California-registered motorhomes used for recreation, are once a year. HDVIP is the roadside check. Fines start at $500 per violation.
